Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day
あの日見た花の名前を僕達はまだ知らない。 (Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai.)

Synopsis

High school student Jinta (Nijiro Murakami) is a hikikomori and lives in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, Japan. One summer day, when Jinta is absorbed in a video game, a girl suddenly appears in front of him. The girl is Jinta's childhood friend Meiko (Minami Hamabe), but it seems impossible because Meiko died on a summer day. Meiko wears the same white dress when she died, but she looks a little taller. She tells Jinta that she has a wish and that's why she came back as a ghost, but Meiko can't remember what her wish was. To grant Meiko's wish, Jinta along with his friends Atsumu (Jun Shison), Naruko (Airi Matsui), Chiriko (Marie Iitoyo), Tetsudo (Yuta Takahata) and Meiko gather together for the first time in 7 years. Jinta soon realizes that he is the only one able to see Meiko.

TL;DR Review

Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day is a one episode TV drama adapted from the same-named manga and anime.

I think adapting an anime into a drama or live action rarely ever work, as you already have a perfect medium (anime) to deliver the story. Why does it need a live action version? Anime adaptation from the manga is one thing, where you change from a still silent format to one with vibrant colors, sounds, and animation. But adapting an anime again to live action doesn’t really distingue itself much.

Voice actor in anime overacts in order to give life to their animated counterpart. Unfortunately, Japanese actors in film and drama come from a culture where overacting is the norm. You need to be acting super cute or super angry or super sad in order to convey your emotion.

The first half of the drama feel really rushed as they try to cram as many characters introduction as possible, title cards included. I was pretty bored with this drama as I am just watching scene per scene interpretation from the anime. There are a few slight edits here and there to cut down the time, but I feel like I am just watching a recap live action of the anime.

Unfortunately, I can not recommend this TV drama unless you are an absolute die-hard fan and must consume everything Anohana. Go watch the anime version instead.
