TL;DR Review

Anohana movie continues after the TV show, as it gives us more backstory of each member of the Super Peace Busters. For Menma, it shows us a flashback of how they met, which wasn’t all that long ago. This greatly reduces the impact of the TV show as it seems weird how strong their bonds are with such a short time. Personally, I think this was a mistake and we could do without her backstory, as it was rather irrelevant. The remaining members are shown their struggle with writing their letter to Menma in Heaven.

The movie re-used a lot of the TV show scenes, to the point it is half recapped and a half epilogue movie. I think this is where the movie fails. Fan of the TV show is barely getting an epilogue and if you have never seen the TV, the flashback does not provide the emotional punch the TV did.

Another sin the movie made was reusing the same scenes twice as if it really need to pad the runtime to the 100 minutes mark. There were a lot of rethreading of the old story just to stretch out the time.

The animation is just as gorgeous and vibrant as the TV series, so at least that is a plus.

The music was also re-used from the TV show, so I guess they went with the “don’t fix what is not broken” mentality. Good thing the TV music was incredibly good.

I think the movie was trying to cater to both demographics of viewers, one that has and has not seen the TV show. As I appreciate it isn’t just another recap movie, I wish it had just forgone the flashback and give us a standalone epilogue.

I can’t say I would recommend this movie to Anohana fan just for the extra tidbits we are getting. I can’t say for sure if the new viewers will like this movie either. If you do plan to watch this movie anyway, have your fast-forward button ready. This movie contains a tiny amount of suggestive themes and dialogs. Appropriate for young teens.
