Beck Live Action Movie Review
ベック (Bekku)

Yukio is your average high school student who spends his days going to class and avoiding bullies. That is until he meets Ryusuke, a guitar prodigy. Together with Taira, Chiba, and Saku, they form the rock band BECK. As their popularity increases so do the danger as Ryusuke's past catches up with him.

BECK (Japanese: ベック Hepburn: Bekku) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Harold Sakuishi. It was originally serialized in Monthly Shōnen Magazine from 1999 to 2008.

A live-action film adaptation of the Beck manga was produced and directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi, who has directed manga-to-film adaptations in the past (most notably the 20th Century Boys trilogy). It stars Takeru Satoh as Koyuki, Hiro Mizushima as Ryusuke, Kenta Kiritani as Chiba, Aoi Nakamura as Saku and Osamu Mukai as Taira. The actors were given proper training on their instruments for the 30 original songs that were written for the film. Beck was released nationwide in movie theaters on September 4, 2010.

TL;DR Review

I know this is a manga adaptation to live action, but I can only compare the differences I see from the anime version. Many things were changed, the character Ryusuke is the most blatant. The anime portrays him as a cool guy that may be too cool, while the live-action portrait him in the opposite spectrum that constantly messes up. Perhaps he’s more realistic this way, but he appears to be a loser at first.

The anime didn’t have much of an antagonist but the live action has multiples, maybe too many. While the anime was a slow burn, the movie has constant conflicts. From the early act with bullies to the later act with a rival band.

While watching the live action Beck movie, I am either in a state of laughing or cringing. I don’t know how to describe this feeling. I got some genuine chuckles sometimes, while other I don’t think I was supposed to laugh. Some scenes made me roll my eyes due to the over-acting or absurd scenario.

The movie may have suffered from too many subplots. You have the bullies, the love story, the love rival, the band formation, the band inner struggle, the rival band, the gangster, the concert competition, etc. It was hard to take all of this in one sitting so I had to take multiple breaks.

Red Hot Chili Peppers and Oasis provide the opening and ending theme songs, “Around the World” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger” respectively. Other songs used in between are in similar style so if you like Japanese rock, you’ll like these.

I added the element Overpowered MC into this movie due to the main character “singing” voice. When everyone jaw drops in reaction to his “singing”, it is quite overpowered.

Even though the movie has many issues, I would still recommend it if you’re a BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad fan. Beck live-action movie contains suggestive themes/dialogs and some foul languages. Intended for young adults.
