TL;DR Review

Birdy the Mighty was one of the earlier anime exposure that just grabbed me. It was a nice short 4 episodes story arc that have action, adventure, superpower, and body swap. Directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, who also directed the Ninja Scroll movie.

I recently re-watched this OVA and it still holds up surprisingly well. Some of the animations may be a bit dated in their style and motion, and the colors are a little muted.

The OVA had a little of the horror elements than the newer TV series. The aliens are introduced as a horror type of monster for the time. As with most villains of this era, they need to flaunt their accomplishments and give speeches. We rarely see Revi does anything other than sending her henchmen to do the dirty work.

I would recommend the original Birdy the Mighty OVA to people who haven’t seen the 1996 version. But if you can’t easily find this anime, it is fine to skip and just watch the newer rebooted TV version. This anime contains graphic violence and moderate suggestive themes/dialog. Intended for young adults.
