TL;DR Review

Black Magic M-66 is an old school anime created by Masamune Shirow, of Ghost in the Shell fame.

The animation is a bit cartoonish in style and mediocre at best even at 1987 standard. Comparing to Wicked City, released during the same year, the art style of Black Magic is definitely inferior. Objects and people don’t have many details to them either.

“Finally: Street Dancer ni Ai o Komete” by Yuki Kitahara is the ending theme and isn’t even worth mentioning.

This was one of my early exposure to anime and I love the action set. It is brutal and can be gory. Killer military robots in a cybernetic future, that premise alone would make my past teenage-self drool. For a killer robot program to take out a specific target, they sure go on a rampage and attack anything they see.

I recall liking this anime when I first saw it. However, watching it now, it didn’t age very well. I guess with the lack of anime back in the day, you’re just happy with what you can find. I am pretty sure this anime took a lot of inspiration from The Terminator (1984), which was released three years prior.

This anime was Masamune Shirow first step into anime so it may be interesting to see his early flawed work. The story is decent and the action is good, unfortunately, everything else was rather a low standard.

I would only recommend Black Magic M-66 to fan of Masamune Shirow just for reference on how his first anime fair. This anime contains graphic violence and some nudity.
