TL;DR Review

Bleach is the first live action movie adaptation of the manga with the same name. In 2008, Tite Kubo (creator) stated that he wished to make Bleach an experience that can be found only by reading the manga, dismissing ideas of creating any live-action film adaptations of the series. With the decline of the Bleach popularity recently, the live-action movie just happens to get approved. interpret it how you will.

Filmography wise, the movie looks good, with passable CGI effects. However, fights between Ichigo and any monsters show no weight to their impact, as if he is just swinging a wooden sword on an empty blue screen. The monster looks good mind you. I would be scared if I see one of those pop up in real life.

The film also features songs by Alexandros, “Mosquito Bite” and “Milk”.

The movie packs a lot of extras characters, with limited dialogs and scenes, that aren’t needed. It was obviously trying to please the fans by cramming the movie with cameos. Pretty much most of these extras only function was to give expositions.

The main antagonists are Byakuya and Renji from Soul Society, and not the Hollow themselves. The whole plot and drive of these antagonists are inconsistent and make little sense. It as if the characters act in a way to justify the required fight scenes. They first want to kill Ichigo in order to bring back Rukia, then they want to kill both, then later is fine with killing neither. They had multiple opportunities to kill him but instead, they give expositions.

I think the movie would have been better if they removed all the high school extras, including the exposition Quincy. Remove both the overacted gangster-type Renji and the I-am-too-cool dreadlock Byakuya and that sub-plot. Focus on the redemption/revenge plot of the Hollow, and give Grand Fisher some extra dialogs to flesh him out as the main antagonist.

I would only recommend the Bleach live-action movie to Bleach fan. I feel the movie lack focus as it tried to check off as many checkboxes as possible. This movie contains graphic violence. Intended for young adults.
