Synopsis

Mayu Otsuka works at the 4th Foreign Affairs Department in the Japanese National Police Agency as a liaison officer with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. She wrote a story about a masked man that supposedly seemed to be a dream, but she isn't sure. Hei and his comrades got themselves a new task and are looking for a numeric password with a sample. A contractor took it from the Gate and buried it under a blossom tree. As events unfold, Mayu seems to fall in love with Hei, while Saitou struggles to confess his feelings for Kirihara.

TL;DR Review

Darker than Black: Beneath the Fully Bloomed Cherry Blossoms is just a one-off OVA from the perspective of a minor character Mayu Otsuka.

The animation is great and on par with the TV series.

The OVA share the first season’s second opening and ending themes. The opening song “Kakusei Heroism ~The Hero Without A Name~” by An Cafe is catchy and memorable.

We see more backstory on the various minor characters than what the TV series actually show.

The OVA took place sometime later during the first season. For a short OVA, it packed quite a bit of content. I thought it was fine the first time I’ve seen it, but upon the second viewing, I appreciate it’s writing much more. The OVA is more comedy in nature and is a bit goofier than the TV series.

I will recommend Darker than Black: Beneath the Fully Bloomed Cherry Blossoms to the fan of the series. This OVA make more sense if you had seen at least the first half of the TV show. Darker than Black contains graphic violence and some suggestive themes/dialogs. Intended for young adults.
