TL;DR Review

Darker than Black: Origins (DARKER THAN BLACK 外伝 Dākā Zan Burakku Gaiden), is an OVA series set in the time between the TV series first two seasons.

The animation is on par with the first season. Considering the animation haven’t improved since three years apart, I will have to downgrade it’s quality from great to good. There are some 3D CGI mixed in, but it was done so well that you can’t tell.

There is no opening theme but the ending theme “DARKER THAN BLACK” by Yasushi Ishii is good and catchy.

We get to explore more of Hei and Yin as they are the only two left. We see Yin is slowing evolving and Hei is struggling to make sense of the situation.

The action is fast pace and tends to be over quite fast. On the other hand, the slow-pace part can drag on a bit. The story does feel a bit more personal this time as it isn’t on such a grand scale as the TV series. It’s mainly about them surviving at first. As this is meant to be a prequel to season two, they had to set up the plot to tie the two seasons together. Personally, I don’t think a second season was needed.

I highly recommend Darker than Black: Origins to the fan of the series. You may not need to have seen the first season, but it definitely helps. Darker than Black contains graphic violence, some nudity, and some suggestive themes/dialogs. Intended for young adults.
