TL;DR Review

Deadman Wonderland: Red Knife Wielder is a poor excuse for an OVA. It is a self-enclosed prequel to the TV show and focuses solely on Senji. This prequel provides nothing substantial to his character. We were introduced to a bunch of generic characters with one to two scenes and quickly sacrificed in order to provide some tragic story for Senji. We were not given enough time to bond with anyone to care if they die.

The story would have been better if it covers something related to the TV, like how did Senji get put in prison? Instead, we are given some random throwaway plot that has almost nothing to do with the TV show. The only tie was an ending scene where they show the prison being built.

The animation was also lazily done, with a handful of scenes that were just still images. I feel like the OVA was made by the interns while the main team was working on the TV show. I am being quite generous giving the animation a “Good” score.

I can’t say I would recommend the OVA to even the TV show fan. Deadman Wonderland contains graphic violence and some suggestive themes/dialogs.
