どろろ (Dororo)

Synopsis

Dororo, a young orphan thief, falls into the company of Hyakkimaru, a powerful demon-hunting rōnin. Before Hyakkimaru's birth his father, a greedy feudal lord, made a pact with 48 demons and let them each take a piece of his unborn son's body, in return for granting him great power. Hyakkimaru was born a barely human creature—without arms, legs, eyes, ears, a nose, or a mouth—and his father had him thrown in the river. He was rescued and raised by Dr. Honma, who made him artificial limbs and helped him learn to fight the demons—each time he defeats one he reclaims one piece of his body. Now he and Dororo travel together through the war-torn countryside.

Overview

During the late 1960s, manga featuring demons was popular among kids. Dororo was first serialized in Weekly Shōnen Sunday between August 27, 1967, and July 22, 1968, before being canceled. Parallel to the anime broadcast, the manga was then concluded in Akita Shoten’s Bōken’ō magazine.

Tezuka’s childhood memory of his friends pronouncing dorobō (どろぼう, “thief”) as dororo inspired the title of this work. A new anime television series adaptation by MAPPA and Tezuka Productions premiered on January 7, 2019, and is streaming on Amazon.

TL;DR Review

Dororo (どろろ) is a Japanese manga series from the manga creator Osamu Tezuka in the late 1960s. A new anime adaptation began airing in 2019 and will consist of 24 episodes.

The animation for this series is dark and visceral, and yet retain that old style of the ’60s in their character design. The combats are sleek and gory. The colors are very subdued, giving it an almost monochrome old school style.

The opening theme “Kaen” (火炎) is performed by Queen Bee, while the ending theme “Sayonara Gokko” (さよならごっこ) is performed by Amazarashi. The music selection doesn’t seem to fit with the theme of the anime, especially the opening credit. The lyrics of the song is rather modern, which gives it more of a contrast with the medieval era subject. This is probably the only complaint I have for this series.

I didn’t have any expectation going in to watch this series, but it got me hooked after the first episode. This is one of my favorite series of 2019 so far. This anime can be gruesome so have the proper mindset ready if you plan to watch this.

Each character introduced is intriguing, along with their back story. The anime does an admirable job of weaving these stories into a believable cruel world.

I highly recommend this series to fan of action dark fantasy. Dororo contains graphic violence and suggestive themes/dialogs. Intended for mature audiences.

This is an ongoing review as the series is still airing.
