TL;DR Review

The Irregular at Magic High School The Movie: The Girl Who Calls the Stars (劇場版 魔法科高校の劣等生 星を呼ぶ少女 Gekijōban Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei: Hoshi o Yobu Shōjo) is a 2017 Japanese animated film based on The Irregular at Magic High School light novel series written by Tsutomu Satō.

The animation is better than the TV series, which is to say it is great. The combat animation is superb and fluid. The ending theme is “Speed Star” by Garnidelia.

The movie takes place after the TV series. What makes the TV series great was how everyone underestimated Tatsuya and how he overcome each of their prejudice and expectation. The movie just gives you a bunch of fan-service beaches and bath shots for most of the movie, then some action set near the end. The movie isn’t bad, it’s just a bit by the number and rather boring at the start.

The anime only get interesting about half to a two-thirds way through, when the action starts to pick up. Despite the fight scene being very enjoyable, it just lacks that satisfying feeling as Tatsuya just overpowered everything. The skirmish also feels really short.

The movie is best viewed by those that are a fan of the series. It is good if you are already familiar with these characters, and feel really flat if you aren’t. The Irregular at Magic High School movie contains graphic violence, nudity, and suggestive themes/dialogs. Intended for young adults.
