TL;DR Review

Kiki’s Delivery Service (Japanese: 魔女の宅急便 Hepburn: Majo no Takkyūbin, “Witch’s Delivery Service”) is a 1989 Japanese animated coming-of-age fantasy film written, produced, and directed by Hayao Miyazaki as an adaptation of the 1985 novel of the same name by Eiko Kadono.

The animation is gorgeous even in today standard. The colors are vibrant and inviting, giving you that nostalgic feeling.

Kiki is a complex 13 years old. The movie does a wonderful job of conveying her myriad of moods and feelings without having to tell us directly. You can see it in her expressions and manners. You rarely see such refine craftmanship in today anime, where everything is filled with expositions.

Kiki is a likable, brave, and endearing kid. I am just glad I wasn’t born into a witch family. I would pee my pant if I had to go out into the world on my own at 13 years old. You feel for her, in both her high and low.

The world of Kiki’s Delivery Service is so inviting. It is in this European Industrial era where people feel safe enough leaving their front door open. It is the type of place and setting you wished still exist today.

This is one of those feel-good movies that can pick you up on a bad day. I highly recommend this movie to everyone. Kiki’s Delivery Service is appropriate and intended for everyone.
