Levius Season 1 (2019)
レビウス

Synopsis

As society rises from the ashes of war, cybernetically augmented arena fighters battle for fame and fortune…or die trying.

It’s the 19th century, and the world has entered the Era of Rebirth, recovering from the devastating flames of war. The sport of mechanical martial arts has galvanized the nations. Cybernetically augmented fighters turn their blood into steam and their bodies into brutal fighting—and killing—machines.

Young Levius is one of those arena battlers, hell-bent on winning to simply survive.

Overview

Based on a sci-fi fighting manga by Nakata Haruhisa. Episode 1 got an early screening in Mannheim, Germany on Aug 2, 2019.

TL;DR First Impression

Either I’ve gotten used to the 3D CGI in anime, or the 3D had gotten much better. The 3D is very comparable to the Godzilla 3D CGI films while the anime topic reminds me of Megalo Box. The quality and production are quite good, especially in the animation.

The opening theme “Wit and Love” by 謎女 is catchy and upbeat. Though the intro feels more like a music montage than an actual anime intro. Despite that, I still like it and would rate it a 7/10. The ending theme “Child Dancer” also by 謎女 was a little more somber but still pleasant. I give the outro a 6/10 score.

World technology is interesting. Though at first, the cybernetic looks advance. It is still based on steam technology so this is like a cyber-steam punk tech. Since this is a steampunk society, everything is cloudy and misty. The world isn’t as vibrant due to the haze but it does feel quite bright due to the bloom created from the mist.

Not much had happened in this episode. It does lay the groundwork for the world and some of the character’s personalities. The episode got me intrigued as this appears more a character-driven show. Will all this be smoke and mirror or will the show have some actual depth to it? I will continue with the series and will give a full review in the future.

The words “big” and “heavy” are the rules to this sport, which does not fit this newbie any inch, but this guy goes and does what…!? Ushio and the small sumo club climbs its way to the top! The goal is Hinoshita Kaisan, a title for the highest rank in professional sumo, the equivalent of Yokozuna.
