TL;DR Review

Love, Death & Robots (stylized as LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS) is an American adult animated anthology television series on Netflix.

Though officially, this isn’t an anime. I feel its art and theme matches that of what I love about anime.

I came into this series blind, knowing nothing of it except it was on Netflix. After watching the first episode “Sonnie’s Edge”, I was hooked and could not stop watching the rest of the season. Granted it is only 185 minutes long, so more akin to a movie length feature.

The 3D CGI are amazing and came very close, if not at that uncanny valley level. If I provides you with some screenshots from certain episode, it would be hard to tell if it was CGI or live action. The series animation styles, however, varied considerably between episodes. I don’t think this is a bad thing as it help break up that uncanny feeling. You can go from life-like animation to goofy cell-shading.

Though, all my personal favorite episodes (Sonnie’s Edge, Beyond the Aquila Rift, Shape-Shifters, Lucky 13, and Secret War) are the life-like animation one. Maybe it is just a coincident.

I highly recommend this series to the fans of cyberpunk and a mature theme animation. Love, Death & Robots contains graphic violence and suggestive themes/dialogs. Intended for mature audiences only.

Time of Eve OVA Series (2008) Review

In the near future, probably in Japan, long after robots have been put to practical use, and not so long since human-type robots, or androids have appeared.

Due to the Robot Ethical Committee, people take it for granted to treat robots as electronic appliances. However, because of their human appearance, except for the halos above their heads, some humans — called dori-kei (android-style) — are becoming too attracted to these androids, and this is causing new social problems.

Rikuo has been taught to treat androids the way he does since he was a child. He does not think of androids as human beings and uses them as useful tools. One day, he discovers that ominous words were recorded in home-android Sammy’s activity log:

“Are you enjoying the time of EVE?”

Tracing her footsteps with his friend Masaki, they arrive at a strange cafe that has put up the slogan not to discriminate between human beings and androids.

Sword Art Online Season 2 (2014) Review

A year has passed since Sword Art Online (SAO) was cleared. Kirito is asked by Kikuoka to investigate Gun Gale Online, specifically Death Gun, a weapon which seemed to link deaths in the virtual reality world to those in the real world.

Upon entering the game, Kirito meets Sinon who teaches him the ropes of the game. They both enter the Gun Gale Online tournament, Bullet of Bullets. Kirito displays his amazing skills although he is only a newcomer to the game. Later, Kirito finds out that the mysterious deaths are linked to a red guild named Laughing Coffin in SAO.
