Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro
ルパン三世 カリオストロの城 (Rupan Sansei: Kariosutoro no Shiro)

Synopsis

Lupin and Jigen have just pulled off another million-dollar heist – only to find out that all one million dollars of it are counterfeit money from Cagliostro! Cagliostro has supplied the world with counterfeit money of all nationalities for decades, only surviving because of the global economy’s strong dependence on the faux dough.

Shortly after crossing Cagliostro’s borders, Lupin encounters the lovely princess of Cagliostro, hotly pursued by the Duke of Cagliostro’s cronies – and loses her to the Duke’s men who imprison her in his heavily-fortified castle. A bit of inquiry reveals that the Duke has plans to marry the princess against her wishes… and perhaps other plans as well, one involving finding a priceless treasure lost for centuries.

TL;DR Review

Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro (Japanese: ルパン三世 カリオストロの城 Hepburn: Rupan Sansei: Kariosutoro no Shiro) is a 1979 Japanese animated action-adventure comedy film co-written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki as his feature film debut.

The animation is beautiful for the late 70’s era, and remind me a bit of Laputa in some parts. The colors are vibrant and give off the impression it’s more colorful than real life. The art style is very goofy, as this is the norm for the time.

The mellow theme song “Honoo no Takaramono” by Bobby is beautiful and haunting. this song reminds me of Porco Rosso’s ending theme, which I also love.

This is the world of Lupin, where physic doesn’t have to make sense. For example, a car driving up a cliff. You need to suspense your disbelief to fully enjoy any Lupin’s anime.

The Lupin movie has a charm to its goofiness that’s endearing. I enjoy the anime throughout and wasn’t put off by it’s dated style. As a Hayao Miyazaki’s film, you can see elements from this anime that will be better refined in his later works.

I recommend this movie to the fan of light-hearted crime comedy. Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro contains graphic violence, smoking and alcohol consumption, and suggestive themes/dialogs. Intended for young adults.

One Piece Season 12 Review

The twelfth season of the One Piece anime series was directed by Hiroaki Miyamoto and produced by Toei Animation. It contains a single story arc, called “Nyōgashima” (女ヶ島, lit. “Maiden Island”), which mainly adapts material from the 53rd and 54th volumes of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga, following the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates after they are scattered across the world by Bartholomew Kuma. Focusing on Luffy, the first 10 episodes depict his stay on Amazon Lilly, an island that is inhabited solely by the Kuja, a tribe of women warriors, and ruled by their leader, the “Pirate Empress” Boa Hancock, one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. The remaining 4 episodes give insight into the fates of Luffy’s crew, while he travels to Impel Down, the world’s largest prison, to save his brother, Portgas D. Ace, from execution.

One Piece Movie 6 Review

The Straw Hats receive an invitation to an island resort on the Grand Line run by Baron Omatsuri, and the crew travels to the island intent on relaxing and having fun. The Baron welcomes them to the resort and encourages them to enjoy themselves, but only after they complete ‘The Trials Of Hell’. The crew is hesitant, but Luffy accepts the challenge. The Straw Hats win the first trial, but the outraged Baron demands they compete in another challenge. Luffy, Chopper, and Robin wait at the resort while the rest of the crew participates in the second trial. Robin questions Muchigoro, one of Baron’s crewmates, about a flower on the island. Muchigoro mentions something about the “Lily Carnation” being at the island’s summit before running off. Luffy and Chopper wander off, both meeting other pirates who had previously arrived and participated in the trials. Luffy receives an ominous warning about Baron splitting up his crew. Chopper learns about Baron’s past, but right before he figures out the mystery, he is stricken with an arrow shot by Baron. The Straw Hats win again, but rifts begin to grow between the crew members. The crew notices Chopper is missing, but Baron interrupts them with a dinner party. The Baron notices Robin leaving, and she reveals to him that she was looking for the Lily Carnation. Baron reveals the flower’s secret to Robin while Robin looks shocked. The Straw Hats realize Chopper, Usopp, and Robin are gone. Arguments over who’s to blame for their disappearances ensue before Baron announces the final trial. The tension between the crew results in the crew splitting up. The island known as Omatsuri Island was really a pirate island, only advertised as a resort by the Baron to lure pirates to the island to bring the same suffering and hatred he felt unto everyone else. Baron feeds the crew to the Lily Carnation, a flower of reincarnation, which gives life to Baron’s crew. Luffy manages to save them from the Lily Carnation and defeat Baron with help from other pirates on the island. Baron cries for his friends that were lost and how he is alone. He had been fooling himself for years with the false constructs of his crew created by the Lily Carnation. Each of his dead crewmates speaks with him, telling him that they were happy to be remembered, but not with his corrupted charade. They apologize for leaving him alone for so long but believe it would be for the best if he forgets the night they died and finds new friends. Luffy lays exhausted on the ground while the crew all appear unharmed with no memory of the incident. The Straw Hats gather around Luffy, wondering how he can sleep in such a place, and Luffy laughs.

One Piece Movie 7 Review

The Straw Hats visit an island, known as Mecha Island, where a fisherman sings an old folk song about a Golden Crown. Searching for that mysterious treasure, they find a hidden entrance into the island. The island’s leader, Ratchet, impressed with the find and in search of the Golden Crown himself, invites the crew to join him in his search and the crew along with Ratchet and his henchmen enter the cave. As it turns out, the island’s true form is that of a giant turtle. Ratchet, who had known this all along, uses his mechanical castle to take control of the turtle wishing to use it to take over the world. Now the Straw Hats have to stop not only Ratchet but also the helpless turtle, from crashing into a nearby island.

One-Punch Man Season 2 Review

An increase in villain activity has the Hero Organization worried that the “Earthdoom prophecy” will soon come to pass. In an effort to alleviate the overworked heroes, they turn to villains themselves for help. The decision looks ill-advised as at least one villain is more interested in helping the prophecy along than preventing it.
