Maison Ikkoku: Through the Passing Seasons is an OVA that recap the entire TV series, done with scenes taken from the series, mainly focused on Godai and Kyoko relationship.
The animation is on par with the TV version, naturally. It was pretty good for the time. The colors are muted and reminiscent of a watercolor painting or a color pencil drawing.
The ending theme is “Kanashimi yo Konnichiwa” by Saitou Yuki. A catchy song that makes me tear up more often than not.
The OVA is pretty well edited and doesn’t feel like a recap episode. If you have never seen the TV show, this OVA may be a decent condense love story. However, if you have the time, watch the 96 episodes TV show instead.
The TV timeline I believe was over 6 years or so, while the edited OVA cut it down to a year. It is pretty hard to condense 40 hours of contents down to a 90 minutes OVA, so I won’t fault them too much for having some open-ended sub-plots.
I recommend this OVA to those that need a refresher to the TV show, but don’t just watch this in place of the TV series. This anime contains some crude comedies, mild suggestive themes, and an extreme amount of alcohol consumption. Intended for young adults.
