TL;DR Review

Record of Lodoss War was one of my all-time favorite anime growing up. However, I need to review it without rose-tinted glasses. Ryo Mizuno created both Record of Lodoss War and Record of Grancrest War, the latter was a major disappointment.

The art was great for the time, and possibly the best for any anime released in 1990. Rewatching it now, I do notice some discrepancy in the quality I didn’t notice before. Zoomed in characters are beautifully drawn, but everything else is either still images with little animation or just rudimentary shapes. The combat is also a bit crude in animation, not to mention the same footages being reused several times.

The haunting opening theme “Adesso e Fortuna: Honoo to Eien” and the ending theme “Kaze no Fantasia”, both by Sherry, are such memorable songs. If you ever skip forward these themes while watching the OVA, you are a monster.

The OVA does not tell the story in chronological order. The first episode took place between episode 5 and 6, with some gap omitted. The second episode flashback to how the party formed with some character’s backstory.

This anime was base on traditional D&D so spell needs long incantation time to activate. Sword swing doesn’t split a horse in half. I suppose the combat is more “realistic” than your typical fantasy genre. Despite just saying that you will see one scene where a battle ax was thrown and caught by the thrower like it’s a freaking boomerang.

Now that the rose-tinted glasses are off, Record of Lodoss War isn’t as great as I recall. It is still a good watch and I recommend it to any fantasy fans. This anime contains graphic violence and is appropriate for young adults.

He ought to be a simple NPC, but the depth of his emotions seem no different than a human. As they search for the boy’s parents, Kirito finds a peculiar memory returning to him. A memory from his childhood, of this boy and a girl, too, with golden hair, and a name he should have never forgotten – Alice.
