Restaurant to Another World Season 1 Review
Restaurant to Another World
異世界食堂 (Isekai Shokudō)

The Western Restaurant Nekoya (洋食のねこや Yōshoku no Nekoya) is a restaurant situated in a mundane corner of an undisclosed Tokyo shopping district which, despite its name, offers a lot of Japanese dishes in addition to Western ones. It opens during usual business hours though closed during holidays and weekends. But secretly it is also open on Saturdays, as on this particular day it creates doorways to another world inhabited by elves, dragons, animal men and other fantastic creatures, who enter the restaurant and partake of its exotic food, with many of them becoming regular patrons.

TL;DR Review

Restaurant to Another World (異世界食堂 Isekai Shokudō) is a Japanese light novel series written by Junpei Inuzuka, with illustrations by Katsumi Enami.

The action animation fluctuates from fair to good. One scene of a dragon flying may feel impressive while another of a character just running may feel clunky. As there are more still images and people talking than normal, some scenes are very well drawn as they don’t have to animate it too much. Most of the details are given to the female characters, go figure.

This series is essentially a food porn show with random world building as the spices. Just get ready for a lot and lot of expositions. Not only does each new character get an introduction, but their served dish also get its own back story and ingredients break down.

Watching this show, just like going to buy grocery, should not be done with an empty stomach. After watching this series, I think I’ve gained five pounds.

There is no continuous plots or story. It is just a collection of short stories, some being more interesting than other, that is loosely tied together by a fine thread. This is not the type of show that would grip you. It is just something you watch to pass the time and can pause and resume at any time.

At the heart of it all, it is still a food show with food reaction skits. They aren’t as crazy as Yakitate!! Ja-pan though. Overall, I was surprised by the show and end up binge-watching the season.

I may classify this series as a slice-of-life anime, but its pace feels faster since it doesn’t revolve around just the main cast. As an ensemble cast show, the slice-of-life scenes fluctuate wildly from mundane or life-threatening.

This series may not be everyone cup of tea, but I recommend it to the fan of food show with a pinch of slice-of-life. Restaurant to Another World contains some graphic violence, alcohol consumption, and nudity. Intended for young adults.
