TL;DR Review

Sword Art Online: Extra Edition is just a nice wrapping on essentially a recap movie of the first season, which threw in some extra swimsuit scenes for fan-service. Though I am not a fan of recap, I must applause their attempt to add an extra plot point into this movie. That being said, the recap had to be heavily edited in order to fit into a 101 minutes movie. The flashback mainly highlights some of Kirito main arc ending, along with how each of the main female characters met Kirito. This will feel disjointed and confusing to new viewers.

I would suggest watching the TV show instead if you have never seen Sword Art Online. The movie is only recommended for the fan who may have forgotten some of the main plot lines or just really into a fan-service movie.

The end of the movie actually has some new material. It involves a mini-quest where Kirito and the crew help Yui see a whale. I think this movie would have been better if they just didn’t try to cram the recap part and expand a little on the rest. Still, I would say it is still worth watching for Sword Art Online fan.

Sword Art Online movie contains moderate violence and an abundant of suggestive themes/dialogs. Intended for young adults.
