TL;DR Review

First of, Your Name. is a gorgeous film. Many of the scenes in the country remind me of Hayao Miyazaki’s style. The colors are vibrant, almost unrealistically vibrant. Every scene is meticulously painted.

The music is superb and by the band RADWIMPS, which remind me a bit of one of my favorite band, Galileo Galilei. The songs tend to be somber and uplifting at the same time.

Watching this anime again reminds me a little of Ocean Waves, also known as I Can Hear the Sea (Japanese: 海がきこえる Hepburn: Umi ga Kikoeru). Ocean Waves was a little gem of an anime done by Studio Ghibli in 1993. Anyway, the ending reminds me a bit of that anime ending scenes.

This anime starts a little slow during the first act, but ramp up nicely by the end of the third act.

I highly recommend this beautiful anime for those into a good (love) story. Your Name contains mild suggestive themes/dialogs and one scene of alcohol (sake) consumption. Intended for young teens and up.

Anohana Season 1 Review

A group of six sixth-grade-age childhood friends drifts apart after one of them, Meiko “Menma” Honma, dies in an accident. Years after the incident, the leader of the group, Jinta Yadomi, has withdrawn from society, does not attend high school, and lives as a recluse. One summer day, the ghost of an older-looking Menma appears beside him and asks to have a wish granted, reasoning that she cannot pass on into the afterlife until it is fulfilled. At first, he only tries to help her minimally because he thinks he is hallucinating. But since Menma does not remember what her wish is, Jinta gathers his estranged friends together once again, believing that they are the key to resolving this problem. All of the group joins him, though most of them do so reluctantly. However, things grow increasingly complicated when his friends accuse him of not being able to get over the death of Menma, for Jinta is the only one who can see Menma’s ghost and his friends think he is seeing things. But as matters progress, it is realized that Jinta is not the only person in the group who is having trouble letting go of the past and later then Menma shows her presence to the group to prove that she is indeed real. It is revealed that all of the group members blame themselves for Menma’s death and long-hidden feelings are rekindled. The group struggles as they grow from trying to help Menma move on and help each other move on as well.

Maison Ikkoku Season 1 Review

Maison Ikkoku is a bitter-sweet comedic romance involving a group of madcap people who live in a boarding house in 1980s Tokyo. The story focuses primarily on the gradually developing relationships between Yusaku Godai, a poor student down on his luck, and Kyoko Otonashi, a young, recently widowed boarding house manager.

Ocean Waves (1993) Movie Review

Ocean Waves is a high school love story set in Kochi, Japan. Morisaku Taku and Matsuno Yutaka are best friends when a girl from Tokyo named Muto Rikako transfers to their school. Excluding herself from group activities, she’s eventually labeled a snob. Matsuno has a crush on Rikako, so it’s no surprise that he gets a little jealous when Morisaku and Rikako start spending more time together. The rumors around school get worse, but Morisaku still insists there is nothing between him and Rikako.
